Skype Encription Too Tough For Ze Police

November 23rd, 2007 No comments

skype.PNGGerman police cannot decipher the encryption used by Skype, and they’re complaining about it. How can they monitor all those bad guys if Skype encrypts the damn data? It’s so unfair.

“The encryption with Skype telephone software … creates grave difficulties for us,” said Joerg Ziercke, president of Germany’s Federal Police Office (BKA). Well, the thing about encryption is that it should create problems for those trying to decipher the message. That’s the whole idea. But, the German authorities aren’t really talking to Skype about this; in fact, since using spyware to collect information from a person’s computer is illegal in Germany, this is probably just pressure to legalize this practice.

Skype uses RSA for key negotiation and the Advanced Encryption Standard to encrypt conversations; these are solid standards, widely recognized for their security. However, if you’re willing to put on your tinfoil hat for a moment, you can always consider the possibility that the NSA put backdoors in some of those standards in the first place.

Know what’s a Liger?

November 23rd, 2007 No comments

Know what’s a Liger? It’s a cross breed of a Lion male and Tiger female… clip-image001.jpg

The 10ft Liger who’s still growing…

He looks like something from a prehistoric age or a fantastic creation from Hollywood . But Hercules is very much living flesh and blood – as he proves every time he opens his gigantic mouth to roar. Part lion, part tiger, he is not just a big cat but a huge one, standing 10ft tall on his back legs. Called a liger, in reference to his crossbreed parentage, he is the largest of all the cat species.

On a typical day he will devour 20lb of meat, usually beef or chicken, and is capable of eating 100lb at a single setting. At just three years old, Hercules already weighs half a ton.clip-image002.jpg

He is the accidental result of two enormous big cats living close together at the Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species, in Miami, Florida , and already dwarfs both his arents. “Ligers are not something we planned on having,” said institute owner Dr Bhagavan Antle. “We have lions and tigers living together in large enclosures and at first we had no idea how well one of the lion boys was getting along with a tiger girl, then loo and behold we had a liger.”

The Skype Phone Is Here

November 21st, 2007 No comments

3skypephone.pngIt’s Skype in your pocket, wherever you go. It works with 3, the mobile provider in the UK (and Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden) that’s already providing Skype on its compatible handsets (through its X-Series internet offering and more recently on all its Mix & Match tariffs if the phone supports it).

The 3 Skypephone does work as a regular mobile phone (on 3 pay as you go or pay monthly), but as you might have guessed from the name, it’s the first phone to build Skype functionality into the core of the device. You can import your Skype contacts into the phone’s contact list and there’s a single call history list for Skype and regular mobile calls. You can always broadcast your Skype status and make unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls wherever you go (subject to a very reasonable fair use policy).

It’s also a pretty slick piece of kit: it’s a 3G phone with a 2 megapixel camera, bluetooth, a 2” 220 x 176 screen, and a microSD slot to add up to 1 GB of memory. It has an internet browser (with 3’s Launcher for easy access to popular sites like eBay, Facebook and YouTube), a music player, and it runs Java applications and games. And did I mention you can make unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls? All in all it’s pretty awesome.

Apple iPhone secretly monitors personal data

November 20th, 2007 No comments

After all the restrictions that Steve Jobs has imposed on the owners of Apple iPhone, now it turns out that Apple is probably secretly collecting personal data from any iPhone.

A power user has found bits of code in the iPhone, that may collect and send personal data, such as IMEI, IP address, and companies you are interested in, to an Apple server via the Weather and Stocks applications. The sent information however is encrypted, so it is not that sure whether it holds the IMEI code of your iPhone. Some experienced users have already reverted the code so that it sends zeroes only. Data monitoring could provide valuable information of how many iPhones have been unlocked, how they are distributed around the world and also for studying user preferences and habits, for example.

Just before you put your tin foil hat on, remember that Apple have stated that “… when you interact with Apple, we may collect personal information relevant to the situation, such as your name, mailing address, phone number, email address, and contact preferences; your credit card information and information about the Apple products you own, such as their serial numbers and date of purchase; and information relating to a support or service issue.” Regardless the legitimate issue of the case, it is definitely immoral for any company to collect personal information in such a secretive manner. Lately, Steve Jobs has been accumulating lots of negativism concerning the iPhone. The latest hot topic was the prosecution of all owners of sites with a domain name including iPhone in it, which led to a spirit of high discontent among the internet society.

The other hot news on behalf of the iPhone, announced by some major news sources, concerns the German unit of Vodafone Group, which has obtained a court order against Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile mobile carrier stating that the German telecommunications giant should start selling unlocked versions of the iPhone in Germany. Deutsche Telekom is selling the iPhone exclusively in Germany along with a mandatory 2-year contract and as such is accused of misuse sales practices. Specifically, Vodafone is questioning the iPhone’s exclusive use in T-Mobile’s network and the use of the device being limited to certain fees within T- Mobile’s subscription offerings. A T-Mobile spokesman has confirmed that the restraining order will be disputed by the respondent.
